Dealing with a danger nap

What is a danger nap? It is a tongue in cheek way of describing a nap which isn't planned and/or will affect the next nap or bed time sleep. They're usually naps which have happened on the go, in a pram or in the car, or naps that have happened at a different time to expected. Danger naps happen from time to time and it's not the end of the world! But you can also reduce the knock on effect they have on the next nap or sleep.

ADJUST YOUR SCHEDULE

If your little one has had an extra sleep where they wouldn't usually and you know it's going to affect the next nap or bed time, then adjust the timings of the next sleep.

If it's bed time that will be affected, push it back slightly, but not so much that they're over tired.

If a next nap is being affected, adjust the timing of that nap and potentially reduce the length of that nap by capping it to help get back on schedule for the day.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO CAP

Don't worry about capping a danger nap. If by waking them from this extra sleep a little earlier it will help them achieve their next nap or their bed time, then do so!

LOOK AT WHATS GOING ON WITH THEM

Extra naps or extra naps can sometimes happen when your little one is feeling unwell, or when they're going through a developmental leap and may need that extra bit of sleep for a few days. If this is the case, try not to worry and allow them some additional sleep for a few days until they're feeling better then get back on track.

SLEEP PATTERNS

If these danger naps are happening frequently, have a look at your schedule as it might need some adjustment to meet their sleep needs better. Remember your baby or child is your best indication of what sleep they require. Generic wake windows and nap schedules are all tailored to the average child, so your child may sit outside of this and require something different.
